Heads up to those hitting the skies in early 2026: The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is implementing a new system—and a new fee—for travelers without specific types of identification. Starting from February 1, travelers who lack a Real ID or other TSA-acceptable forms of ID will be charged $45 to use a "modernized alternative identity verification system," dubbed TSA ConfirmID, at security checkpoints. According to a post by the City of Westlake Ohio Police Department, this fee will cover a 10-day travel period.

The new measure comes as a push to get flyers to update to Real ID-compliant identification, which will be required to board commercial flights, among other federal purposes. Given the impending changes, TSA recommends that those without a Real ID to make an appointment at their local DMV as soon as possible. The list of acceptable IDs includes, but is not limited to, state-issued Enhanced Driver's Licenses (EDL), U.S. passports, and Department of Defense IDs. A temporary driver's license will not make the cut, nor will a regular state-issued ID that doesn't meet Real ID standards.

For those unsure whether their license or ID card is Real ID-compliant, they should check with their state's Department of Motor Vehicles. TSA's website is also a resource for travelers to verify which types of identification will be accepted. The shift to Real ID-compliant documents is not new, the standard was set with the intention of enhancing security measures following recommendations after 9/11. Despite years of awareness campaigns and extended deadlines, the move to fee-based verification underscores the urgency of compliance efforts.

Travelers without an accepted form of ID at the time of check-in will be referred to TSA ConfirmID. This process is put in place as an optional recourse for identity verification prior to entering the security line, as stated by the City of Westlake Ohio Police Department. However, with the cost of convenience set at $45, it’s evident that the TSA is signaling a clear preference for updated credentials amongst air passengers. Given the changes and fees looming on the horizon, travelers should be proactive to ensure their ID is up to snuff—or be prepared to pony up the cash.
