The political landscape in Arizona is witnessing a fervent bid to reinstate Republican dominance, as the Phoenix-based Turning Point USA launches the Arizona PAC. Their immediate goal is to challenge the current Democratic Governor, Katie Hobbs, advocating for the election of Congressman Andy Biggs. Democratic strategist Eric Chalmers observed that Turning Point's clout in Arizona and nationally seems to be rapidly expanding, potentially overtaking almost the entire GOP in the state. This sentiment was echoed in a statement obtained by ABC15, with Chalmers citing their trajectory as significant.
In a recent demonstration of their influence, Turning Point-backed candidate Dorean Taylor successfully ousted Mesa's Republican Councilwoman Julie Spilsbury after her endorsement of Democrats in the previous election. Spilsbury told ABC15 that she was taken aback by the extensive resources Turning Point directed at the Mesa council race. Her defeat has amplified broader concerns regarding party conformity and the GOP's direction in Arizona.
Meanwhile, the organization's political arm, Turning Point Action, is threatening to single-handedly disrupt the Indiana GOP. Officials there promise to funnel an unprecedented amount of money against Senate Republicans opposing President Trump's pro-GOP congressional map initiative. In defiance of the public response against the redistricting, Turning Point Action's enterprise director Brett Galaszewski declared they would not hesitate to throw, as confirmed by a statement to the Indiana Capital Chronicle, "We will throw so much money and resources into this state that no amount of money coming from a leadership (political action committee) will be able to offset it."
Adding to the tumult, Indiana Governor Mike Braun and U.S. Rep. Marlin Stutzman reinforced their resolve at a Turning Point Action rally, with Braun criticizing the Senate for stalling 'good ideas' and Stutzman drawing parallels between political tactics in Democratic states and the redistricting battle in Indiana. To further galvanize its point, Turning Point Action notably invited constituents to leave messages for their senators at the Statehouse, creating a blitz campaign to push the redistricting legislation through, as reported by the Indiana Capital Chronicle.
As both states approach critical junctures, the actions of Turning Point USA and its affiliates will likely have a profound impact on the political dynamics within the Republican Party and beyond. With money acting as a formidable vector in these political contests, the closing months leading to midterm elections are set to become increasingly contentious as alignments within the GOP continue to be redrawn.
