Swartz Creek Community Schools are embracing change as Wayne Wright has been announced as their new interim superintendent, effective January 1, 2026. Amid the School Board's ongoing search for a permanent leader, Wright steps in to offer a steady hand following the resignation of Jim Kitchen. As noted by the Board President Chuck Melki, and reported by WNEM, Wright's appointment is "intended to provide stability and continuity."
With Kitchen's departure after a 15-year tenure, Wright's interim role has become all the more crucial. In a statement obtained by abc12, Melki expressed, "The Board’s timeline or commitment to selecting a permanent superintendent," will not be altered by this temporary appointment. Drawing on his past experiences as interim superintendent for Goodrich Community Schools in 2019 and New Lothrop Schools in 2024, Wright is expected to transition smoothly into his short-term role.
While Wright gets set to take up his new position in the new year, the board remains focused on finding a long-term presence for the superintendent's office. This is part of an ongoing effort outlined by midmichigannow to select a permanent superintendent later in the school year. Kitchen, who resigned on December 19th, had himself stepped in following the appointment of the previous superintendent, Rod Hetherton, as the superintendent for Zeeland Public Schools in June.
According to details shared on social media by Melki and as reported by abc12, Wright brings with him a wealth of experience suited for guiding school districts through periods of transition. Looking towards the future, Melki underlined the support from staff, families, and the community during this time, stating, "We appreciate the continued support of our staff, families, and community as we move forward during this transition." Wright will take on the challenge of keeping Swartz Creek Community Schools on course until a new leader is at the helm to chart the permanent course ahead.
