Attention Asheboro drivers, you'll need to rethink your weekend travel plans. According to the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT), U.S. 64 Business at the Albermarle Road (N.C. 49) overpass is getting a temporary shutdown for bridge construction work. This means you won't be breezing over the standard route starting after 12:01 a.m. Saturday through early Monday morning.
The reason behind the roadblock is the installation of steel girders necessary to prop up the new bridge, which is gradually taking shape next to the current passageway. Due to the intricate nature of the task, the highway will be inaccessible in both directions during this period. In an article published by the NCDOT, the closure is expected to last from "12:01 a.m. Saturday" until "5 a.m. Monday, Dec. 15."
For those who regularly travel this stretch, don't worry; a detour is already mapped out. It will redirect traffic onto the U.S. 64 Asheboro Bypass, then onto Interstate 73/74, and finally lead back to the U.S. 64 Business interchange near the Albermarle Road overpass.
This inconvenience is part of a grander scheme— a construction project that's been in the works since last year. The goal is to widen a mile stretch of U.S. 64 Business between the Asheboro Bypass and the I-73/74 interchange, along with other road realignments and enhancements in the area of U.S. 64 Business and I-73/74 junction. NCDOT has stated that the overpass work is one piece in a complex puzzle that, when finished in 2029, will likely improve traffic flow and safety for the local community.
