A tragic incident occurred on the Lower East Side yesterday evening, as a woman was fatally hit by an SUV in a harrowing hit-and-run accident. ABC7 New York reports the accident took place just before 7 p.m. at the intersection of Clinton and Stanton streets, starkly reminding us once more of the unpredictability of city streets.
The NYPD has disclosed that the black SUV was traveling north on Clinton Street and was to make a right turn onto Stanton Street when it struck the woman as she crossed within the bounds of a marked crosswalk. Despite the immediacy of the emergency, the driver chose to continue eastbound on Stanton Street, leaving the scene in a manner that speaks of an awful disregard for human life. The victim was transported to Bellevue Hospital, where, despite the efforts to save her, she was pronounced dead. The details of the collision were provided by the police and eyewitnesses at the scene.
As of now, the identity of the woman remains unknown, and the police are engaging their efforts to identify not only her but also the make and model of the SUV involved. The Gothamist captured a statement from the authorities stating their ongoing work to gather leads on this distressing event that has shaken the community.
Reflecting on the wider scene, NYPD data has indicated a reduction in traffic deaths within the 7th Precinct, encompassing the Lower East Side. This year through December 14, there were no traffic deaths reported in the precinct, a notable decrease from six the previous year during the same period, with all of last year's incidents involving pedestrians. Citywide, traffic deaths are to have reportedly decreased by 20% since 2024, which offers a glimmer of hope in an otherwise grim trend of metropolitan fatalities.
