Birthday celebrations are not only reserved for people, and the Yamhill County Sheriff's Office has taken to social media to mark an occasion for one of their own – a four-legged deputy. The office shared a post recognizing the 4th birthday, or 32nd in dog years, of K9 Valkyrie, affectionately known as "Valk." The birthday announcement was met with cheer, as Valk is not just any canine, but a certified member of the force with a track record of successes.
Known for her dedication to duty, Valk was brought into the fold of the Yamhill County Sheriff in February 2023, and together with Deputy Waker swiftly earned her certification from the Oregon Police Canine Association (OPCA) within the same year. A German Shepherd originating from the Czech Republic, she specializes in tracking, trailing, wind scenting, building searches, and locating evidence, as well as suspects. With her keen senses, she has become an invaluable asset for the protection of law enforcement and civilians alike.
In one of her noteworthy achievements after joining the unit, Valk demonstrated her expertise "In her first week on the job, she recorded her first capture of a wanted subject who fled on foot from deputies," as reported in the Yamhill County Sheriff's Officeofficial Facebook post. This initial success set the tone for her career, which has been marked by steadfast service and continued achievements in the pursuit of public safety.
The Yamhill County Sheriff's Office invites the community to join in on the celebration with their post, "Join us in wishing K9 Valk a happy birthday! 🥳🎂🎉🐾" It is these moments that spotlight the unique bond between K9s and their handlers, and the important role service dogs play in law enforcement. Valk's birthday is a reminder of the hard-working dogs that serve within the public safety sector, tirelessly contributing to the community's well-being.
