Jacksonville residents had the opportunity to recycle and improve their neighborhoods this past weekend. In partnership with Keep Jacksonville Beautiful and Greenscape of Jacksonville, the City of Jacksonville hosted the 16th Annual America Recycles Day event. Yesterday, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., residents were able to drop off paper waste for recycling at Parking Lot 18 of the University of North Florida, according to the City of Jacksonville.

Continuing its tradition, this year’s event also coincided with the city’s Arbor Day celebration. Residents were allowed to drop off up to three 3-gallon-sized trees per vehicle on a first-come, first-served basis. Located across from Hodges Stadium at 1 South UNF Drive, the drive-through event provided participants with the opportunity to recycle up to two 30-gallon bags or boxes of paper, which were collected and shredded on-site by Republic Services, a longtime event sponsor.

Reflecting on the previous year, the event collected 5.45 tons of paper and facilitated the planting of 2,000 trees, demonstrating increasing community participation and environmental impact. A total of 85 volunteers contributed 410.5 hours, an effort valued at $14,244.35 by Keep America Beautiful for the time donated.
