A 19-year-old man, Jahmir Turner, was shot in the back on Secor Avenue in the Eastchester section of the Bronx yesterday, resulting in his death. This incident is the first recorded homicide in the area this year, which residents say is not typically associated with violent crime.
The fatal shooting occurred around 5:40 p.m. Authorities, according to Gothamist, have arrested two suspects in connection with the incident. Turner, who lived less than half a mile from the scene, was pronounced dead at Jacobi Hospital. The motive for the shooting has not been determined, and detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.
Last year, 25 teenagers were killed by gun violence citywide, with this incident representing the first teen fatality from gun violence in New York City this year. Gothamist reports that policing data indicates the 47th Precinct—which includes the area where the shooting occurred—saw an increase in homicides, rising from eight to thirteen compared with the previous year.
The shooting disrupted the peace of a neighborhood that residents say rarely experiences deadly violence. Suzanne Rochester, a longtime resident, told ABC7NY that in her 60 years of living there, such incidents have been uncommon. Another resident, Shanua Rodriguez, said she heard gunshots while talking with someone, noting the rarity of such events in the area. Despite ongoing construction and the presence of a nearby car dealership, the shooting stands out as an unusual occurrence on the otherwise quiet Secor Avenue block.
Police investigated the scene, marking shell casings and examining items such as a plastic bag. The suspect, described as a male dressed in all black, reportedly fled on foot toward Boston Road, and law enforcement continues to search for him. Community members and Turner’s family are awaiting information as officials work to determine the circumstances of the incident in an area unaccustomed to such violence.
