A tragic RV fire in St. John the Baptist Parish has left a 67-year-old man dead, prompting a comprehensive investigation by the Louisiana Office of State Fire Marshal (SFM). The incident occurred in the morning hours on Monday, Firefighters swiftly responded to the scene in the 100 block of 18th Street in Reserve, according to a report from WWLTV. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and authorities have not yet to rule out the role of lithium-ion batteries as a potential factor.
Highlighting an often-overlooked household hazard, state officials are urging the public to use caution when charging electronic devices with lithium-ion batteries. According to a statement obtained by L'Observateur, residents should adhere strictly to using manufacturer-approved chargers and promptly replace any damaged charging cords. A related variable in the ongoing investigation is the absence of a working smoke alarm within the vehicle cited by State Fire Marshal Bryan J. Adams, who emphasized that, "Smoke alarms provide early warning and save lives. It’s not the flames that kill, it’s the smoke."
Reinforcing the importance of functional smoke alarms, state fire officials are advocating for regular testing and proper installation in both homes and recreational vehicles. Those lacking a smoke alarm may seek assistance through the State Fire Marshal's Operation Save-A-Life program, a resource outlined by L'Observateur. Applications for a free alarm and installation service are made available via local fire departments or on the State Fire Marshal’s Office website at lasfm.org.
Speaking on the importance of proper charging habits, SFM Public Affairs Director Ken Pastorick told WWL Radio, "It is important to always use the charger that came with the device or one approved by the manufacturer. If the cord only works when you bend it just right, it’s time to replace it." Pastorick's advice comes as a somber reminder of how the convenience of modern technology can swiftly turn perilous without vigilance and due care.
