The new year in New York City was marred by a sudden burst of violence in the subway when a 72-year-old man became the victim of an unprovoked attack. As reported by the New York Post, the elderly man was waiting for the Manhattan-bound No. 4 train at the Bronx’s 161-Yankee Stadium station around 3:30 a.m. when he was shoved into the side of an oncoming train.
The perpetrator, identified by police as 29-year-old Anton Aleshin from Brooklyn, was arrested at the scene. Faced with charges including attempted murder, assault, and reckless endangerment, Aleshin's actions sent the 72-year-old man's head flying into the arriving train, as caught by the NYPD. According to police sources that may have been drunk at the time, Aleshin was still awaiting arraignment in Bronx Criminal Court yesterday evening.
As conveyed by PIX11, the elderly straphanger was pushed into the No. 4 train as it entered the station, bouncing off the carriage and landing back on the platform. Emergency services transported the victim, who sustained head injuries, to the hospital where he was reported to be in stable condition.
The incident follows several recent acts of violence in the city’s transit system. In a separate case, a man was injured during an altercation at a Brooklyn subway station. In another incident, a train conductor was assaulted and had personal items taken while on duty. These events come as state officials, including Governor Kathy Hochul, have cited increased safety measures and expanded law enforcement presence in the subway system, according to the New York Post.
