An 8-year-old child was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital by helicopter after a collision with a vehicle in northwest Harris County, as reported by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. The incident occurred on Monday evening just after 7:30 p.m., on the 15400 block of Gettysburg Drive, close to Louetta Road. Originally reported as a scooter accident Click2Houston clarified that, the child was actually on rollerblades when struck by the vehicle.
According to the KHOU report, the crash happened as both the juvenile driver and the rollerblading child attempted to navigate a break in the median meant for U-turns. The child, traveling southbound alongside the sidewalk and through the grassy median, and the vehicle, operated by the teen driver, ended up in the same lane, leading to the collision. Subsequently, the child was dragged for a brief distance until the vehicle came to a stop.
The driver of the Chevrolet Equinox that hit the child remained at the scene and has been fully cooperative with the ongoing investigation. Described as a teenager with a valid license and a clean driving record, no signs of intoxication, or previous history of reckless driving were observed by authorities. Following the crash, the child was reported to be conscious, alert, and is expected to make a recovery. This update provides some measure of relief given the severity of the incident.
Investigators took note that the area where the accident took place was illuminated, though not very brightly. No prior accidents have been reported at this particular stretch of road which may suggest that the layout of the area was not inherently prone to incidents of this nature. Nevertheless, the events of Monday evening are a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of road safety, especially for those most vulnerable among us.
