According to Constable Mark Herman, Harris County Precinct 4, deputies responded to the scene after the vehicle left the roadway and struck the building near the exit ramp. The office posted that EMS was en route to evaluate those involved, and the investigation into what caused the vehicle to leave the tollway remains ongoing. Photos shared by the constable's office showed a Texas license plate reading XFP-9653 at the scene, though it's unclear from available information whether that vehicle was confirmed to be the one involved in the crash.
The constable's office urged the public to avoid the crash area and to use caution as emergency crews continued to respond. It has not been disclosed how many people, if any, were injured, what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway, or the extent of damage to the building — all questions that remain open as the investigation continues.
A Dangerous Stretch of Roadway
The Rankin Road exit sits along a stretch of the Hardy Toll Road that has seen repeated serious crashes in recent years. Just two days earlier, on Tuesday, a fatal single-vehicle crash shut down the northbound lanes of the tollway at East Richey Road, just north of the Rankin Road ramp, according to previous Hoodline reporting.
The corridor's history of severe wrecks goes back further. In April 2025, a rollover crash involving hazardous material shut down the northbound lanes near the same Rankin Road exit, requiring a heavy wrecker response, as reported by Click2Houston. And in December 2023, a high-speed pursuit along the tollway ended in a fatal head-on collision near Rankin Road after a suspect driving 90 mph in a stolen vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic, according to KHOU.

The Harris County Constable Precinct 4 Toll Road Command holds primary patrol and crash-investigation jurisdiction over the Hardy Toll Road north of the Sam Houston Tollway, working in coordination with the Harris County Toll Road Authority.
