Maple Grove police say a Monday night protest outside the SpringHill Suites in the Arbor Lakes area ended with arrests, reports of unlawful behavior, and damage to hotel property. Officers said objects were thrown at personnel as they worked to clear the crowd, and several people were taken into custody during the response.
In a press release shared via the Maple Grove Police Department, officials said officers first arrived around 8:00 p.m. and quickly issued a dispersal order. According to the department, the crowd had largely broken up by about 10:00 p.m. Police said people who ignored dispersal commands or committed crimes were arrested, and that some hotel property was damaged during the incident.
Part of a Wider Wave of Protests
The Maple Grove protest unfolded amid a broader wave of anti federal enforcement demonstrations around the Twin Cities, following recent federal operations that have drawn large crowds and occasionally turned disorderly. Local TV and national outlets documented a separate confrontation outside a Minneapolis hotel where state officials said federal agents used chemical irritants while state patrol officers were making arrests, as reported by The Guardian.
Policing Partners on Scene
Maple Grove police said they coordinated with the Hennepin Public Order Group and the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office, and that personnel from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and the Minnesota State Patrol also assisted with public safety duties. Officers remained in the area to monitor activity even after the crowd had dispersed, according to the release.
The department listed Commander Jon Wetternach as the contact for follow up questions in the announcement posted via Maple Grove Police Department.
Arrests and Next Steps
Police confirmed that arrests were made but did not specify how many people were taken into custody or what charges they may face in the initial statement. Those arrested will go through standard booking and charging procedures in Hennepin County, and investigators plan to follow up on reports of property damage and any alleged assaults on officers.
