In the effort to ensure safer roads for Arlington, the local police department is pushing forward with the Safe Roads Initiative—a program aimed at curtailing driving behaviors that lead to accidents and fatalities. The Arlington Police Department recently posted on their Facebook page that in a recent enforcement effort, an officer stopped a vehicle barreling down the highway at 102 MPH.
The post provides a schedule of upcoming enforcement actions, including patrols scheduled yesterday at Green Oaks Blvd., and the same night on I-20. The traffic unit will also be out in force on Saturday, January 24, this time on I-30 and SH 360, with a special focus on deterring driving while intoxicated (DWI). But the police aren't just out to play gotcha; they're part of an awareness campaign, too. "We share these updates to educate, raise awareness, and prevent tragedies caused by speeding, reckless driving, impaired driving, and other fatal crash factors," the Arlington Police Department explained.
Some residents might wonder why the Arlington Police Department would announce enforcement locations, considering that this information could seemingly benefit those seeking to flout the law. The department's answer, as quoted directly from the post, is: "Because visibility saves lives. People making reckless choices aren’t checking social media first—but responsible drivers and community members do. And sometimes, a reminder is all it takes to slow down, choose a sober ride, or make it home safely." It's a strategy rooted in prevention rather than in remediation.
