Athens-Clarke County is gearing up to honor Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a host of service activities and changes to city services. On Monday, January 19, volunteers can join the MLK Day of Service at various community locations, kicking off from 8:30-9:30 AM at the Lay Park Gymnasium. The first 400 volunteers to register will be greeted with a complimentary t-shirt and refreshments before setting out to assist 30+ organizations from 10:00 AM to noon. Registration for the event is available online, with limited opportunities for day-of enrollment also on hand, as reported by the Athens-Clarke County website.
As the city prepares to pay tribute, service adjustments for the holiday have been put into place. Animal Services will remain closed on Monday, with emergency on-call services still operational and accessible by dialing 911. Leisure facilities will follow suit, closing doors on the 19th, while parks operate under reduced hours, excluding Sandy Creek Park, which will be shuttered for the day. Post-holiday, residents should expect services to gradually return to normal from January 20.
Sanitation schedules will take a brief pause as well, as clarified by the Solid Waste Department. There will be no garbage and recycling pickups on January 19 for residential and commercial sectors outside the Downtown district. Instead, collections will be delayed by a day until regular service resumes on Friday, January 23. Within the Downtown vicinity, operations continue as scheduled. Landfills, CHaRM, and the recycling facilities also adjust hours or grant workers a day off in recognition of MLK Day.
Absent from the streets on MLK Day will be the city transit services. The buses plan not run, effectively pressing pause on the day's journeys for many, only to rev back into the routine the following day. Other government offices and facilities like City Hall and various departmental buildings will be joining a citywide observance, closing down on Monday and bouncing back on January 20.
Full details on the service changes and volunteer opportunities for the MLK Day observances can be found on the Athens-Clarke County's official website. The city encourages community members to take part in the service events as a way to honor the legacy of Dr. King and to support local organizations throughout this national holiday.
