Atlanta police have moved swiftly in the aftermath of a tragic shooting that left an adult male dead early Saturday morning. Sources from the Atlanta Police Department relayed that investigators secured arrest warrants for Prentiss Mayo, 39, in connection with the city's sixth registered homicide of the year. The incident unfolded at 520 Emily Place NW, where officers discovered a male victim with a fatal gunshot wound. Law enforcement took Mayo into custody and he is currently being held at Grady Detention, prior to a transfer to Fulton County Jail. Atlanta PD's official release states that the charges include murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
The criminal history of the suspect is not without concern. Mayo's past includes three criminal cycles in Georgia, primarily related to narcotics and DUI offenses. Adding to the gravity of his situation is an active warrant for probation violation originating from Carrollton PD, also due to a DUI charge. However, it is important to note, as the investigation uncoils and more evidence comes to light, these preliminary details may evolve.
Details from the night of the shooting remain sparse, but Atlanta Police were called to the scene at about 2 a.m. on January 22. Once there, they located the victim and shortly after, Atlanta Fire Rescue arrived and declared the individual deceased. A potential suspect, later identified as Mayo, was detained at the scene for questioning by homicide investigators. The Fulton County Medical Examiner is assigned to confirm the precise cause of death through autopsy, while the police inquiry is still very much in progress. Official statements emphasize that the information currently available is preliminary and subject to change.
