As the chill of winter sets in, the City of Atlanta is taking action to protect its vulnerable residents from the cold. Ahead of dropping temperatures, the city has announced the opening of several warming centers to offer shelter to those in need. According to the city's official website, the centers will be available at various times and locations starting from Saturday evening through tomorrow morning.
In a bid to ensure everyone has a safe place to stay warm, the first center will open its doors at the Central Park Recreation Center located at 400 Merritts Ave. NE. The center's operations are scheduled for specific intervals throughout the weekend and into the early week. Officials have announced the opening times as Saturday from 8:00 p.m., and running into Sunday until 2:00 p.m., then again from Sunday evening until Monday at 1:00 p.m., and finally on Monday evening until Tuesday at 11:00 a.m.
For women and children, a dedicated warming center will be available at the Selena S. Butler Park and Recreation Center at 98 William Holmes Borders Dr. NE. Meanwhile, any overflow is directed to the Old Adamsville Recreation Center at 3404 Delmar Ln NW. These centers not only provide shelter but also the assurance of safety and community in the face of severe weather conditions.
To facilitate access to these services, the city is offering transportation from the Gateway Center each night at 8:00 p.m., with return trips being organized by Fulton County once the warming centers are deactivated. The specific activation times for the centers, however, are subject to change based on updates from the National Weather Service forecast, as per the City of Atlanta's announcement.
