
An altercation that began as a domestic dispute in Atlanta's Zone 1 escalated to a scene of aggravated assault involving a firearm and resulted in the injury of a police officer, as per the Atlanta Police Department. Officers initially responded to a call around 1:09 p.m. on Monday on Troy St. NW where they learned a verbal conflict had spiraled into violence and that a gun was drawn, the suspect, later identified as Rakwon Brooks, had fled prior to their arrival.
As police searched the area, they located Brooks near 250 Stafford St. NW. A confrontation ensued when officers attempted to detain him. Brooks physically resisted and reached for his waistband, where he had stashed a firearm. In the ensuing scuffle, the weapon discharged, grazing an officer's leg. The officer received medical attention for the non-life-threatening injury and was transported to a local hospital, while Brooks was detained without further incident, according to a news release by the Atlanta PD.
Rakwon Brooks faces multiple charges that include possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, obstruction of law enforcement, aggravated assault, aggravated assault on law enforcement, and simple battery, family violence; this, in addition to existing active warrants for murder and battery, domestic violence out of Dekalb County. It's important to note that an arrest doesn't equate to a conviction, with suspects being considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, as mentioned by the Atlanta PD.
