A woman was killed early Friday after a driver struck her and took off at Havana Street and East 4th Way in Aurora, according to police. The crash happened around 5:15 a.m. near a bus stop. The driver was gone by the time officers got there, and police shut down lanes in the area while crash investigators documented the scene.
According to Denver7, officers found the woman lying in the roadway as traffic was stopped. Witnesses gave them conflicting descriptions of the vehicle involved. The outlet reported that northbound Havana was closed at 1st Avenue, and eastbound 3rd Avenue was blocked at Havana while investigators worked, though southbound Havana stayed open. The Aurora Police Department’s Traffic Investigations Unit is handling the case.
The Aurora Police Department news page explains that the Traffic Investigations Unit leads probes into fatal collisions and regularly calls on the public for tips, video, and other evidence. The site also lists contact information for the Public Information Office and the city’s non-emergency line for anyone who wants to speak directly with investigators.
What investigators want
Detectives are asking anyone who saw the crash or who has dash-cam, doorbell, or cellphone video from the Havana Street corridor around that time to come forward, especially because eyewitness accounts have not lined up. As Denver7 noted, officers at the scene early Friday did not have a single suspect description that matched what all witnesses reported. Even small details - a partial license plate, a distinct paint scrape, or a precise time stamp on a clip - could help them zero in on the vehicle involved.
Legal consequences
Under Colorado law, a driver who leaves the scene of a crash that results in someone’s death can face a class 3 felony charge, which carries the potential for prison time and steep fines, according to the Colorado Revised Statutes. The law requires drivers in crashes involving injury or death to stop, provide reasonable aid, exchange information, and report the collision to authorities.
Anyone with information is asked to call Aurora police non-emergency at 303-739-7000 or the department’s Public Information Office at 720-432-5095. Anonymous tips can be submitted to Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-STOP (7867). Officials have not yet released the victim’s name, and the investigation is still active. Police are urging anyone with footage or details, no matter how minor they may seem, to contact detectives quickly so they can follow up.
