Powering through an uptick in their workload, the department highlighted a 35 percent increase in arrests, tallying 7,909 for the year. Responsible for answering a vast number of calls for service, the officers tackled 266,848 instances where the public reached out for help. Traffic enforcement, not to be overshadowed, resulted in 21,402 citations, ensuring roads might be safer for Aurora citizens.
The department credits evidence-based strategies and an unwavering mission to drive down crime rates while keeping the community safe for the tangible declines across several major crime categories. According to the Aurora Police Department, major crime bore a reduction of 25.5 percent, nonfatal shootings were cut nearly in half at 48.4 percent, and motor vehicle theft was reduced by 42.2 percent.
On the technological front, the introduction of the Real Time Information Center was deemed a noteworthy success, evidenced by its contribution to 285 arrests and summons. Amidst deploying sophisticated tools like license plate readers, the department insists that it operates under strict guidelines that respect privacy and access limitations, resulting in the recovery of stolen vehicles and identification of felony suspects. These efforts, as the department marked it, led to 3,719 fewer victims in Aurora.
