The beloved Mimi DiPietro Skating Center in Baltimore's Patterson Park, affectionately known as 'The Bubble,' will glide into its final season with grandeur as doors reopen for the last time tomorrow. WMAR-2 News reported that the grand opening celebration, featuring free cookies, hot cider, and hot chocolate, with admission at $1 and $3 skate rentals, will be held from 3-5 p.m. following a closure due to electrical repairs announced just two months prior.
A history of structural problems including issues with the foundation, the integrity of the dome, and soil movement has plagued the facility since it was flagged nearly three decades ago in the 1998 Patterson Park Master Plan, the iconic rink that has been the home of the Banners hockey team since 2003 is now facing a bitter-sweet finale due to the prohibitive costs of addressing these long-standing issues.
According to WBAL, opened 39 years ago, the rink has been a staple in the community, with generations of families and ice enthusiasts gracing its surface. The decision to ultimately shutter the facility after this season comes despite recent fixes, as the required comprehensive renovations to secure its future prove to be too expensive. With the clock ticking down to its final moments, the center invites patrons to make the most of this last season.
