Boston weather is presenting a mix of conditions over the next several days, with a chance of both rain and snow as temperatures fluctuate. National Weather Service forecasts a slight chance of showers today, with a high of 51 degrees before dipping down to a low around 21 tonight. Snow showers may appear later in the evening, as the chance of precipitation remains at 20%. Looking ahead to the weekend, there's a 50% chance of snow on Saturday and a 60% likelihood on Sunday, with the latter possibly continuing into the night at a 70% chance.
Cold air is expected to quickly move back into the Boston area this afternoon, after a relatively warmer morning. According to NBC Boston, highs will initially be in the upper 40s before falling into the 30s by the day's end. Despite the frigid start to Friday, temperatures should rise back up into the low 30s.
Saturday's weather might bring a quick-moving system that's likely to cause precipitation in the form of mostly rain along the coast, but as we move inland beyond I-128, snow is expected to mix in. Central Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire are predicted to see the greatest chance of accumulation, though amounts are forecasted to be modest — potentially an inch or two at higher elevations.
For Sunday, attention shifts to a developing storm off the Southeastern U.S. "The focus then turns to Sunday night with a developing storm off the Southeastern U.S. The more reliable guidance shows this storm moving far offshore, while the less reliable guidance has it hitting us with six or more inches of snow." Artificial intelligence has apparently made the forecast less clear-cut, with both sets of models now indicating a similar outcome: a glancing shot of snow into Monday morning with some accumulation possible, as per NBC Boston reports.
As we move past the weekend, weather will clear up for Martin Luther King Day with mostly sunny skies and a high near 33, then temperatures are set to drop again with a low around 14 by Monday night. The rest of the week looks mostly clear with highs in the low to mid-20s, giving Boston residents a brief respite from precipitation.
