As a winter storm bears down on Massachusetts, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu has declared a snow emergency, with city offices, including schools, shuttered to brace for the impact, while residents are urged to abide by snow regulations effectively starting 8 a.m. Sunday, as reported by both WCVB and WHDH. Boston Public Schools will remain closed on Monday, and all after-school activities on Sunday and Monday are canceled, the same precautions extend to Boston City Hall and other municipal buildings, which will not open on Sunday and Monday.
In preparation for the storm, a parking ban will be imposed, and vehicles found on significant roads and arteries risk being towed, the Mayor's proclamation of the snow emergency introduced resolute measures to ensure thoroughfare safety and access for emergency services, vehicles parked illegally after the declared start time will face immediate towing, and residents are encouraged to move their vehicles to designated parking garages or spaces, to do so residents with a sticker can find a parking garage or other suitable locations.
"We're dealing with two public safety events," Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox acknowledged the dual burden as the city preps for the snowstorm and, simultaneously, the New England Patriots game, with a call for residents to celebrate responsibly and a reminder to stay indoors, especially during peak storm hours, as Cox told WCVB.
The storm, which is forecasted to dump one to two feet of snow across the state, as per estimates from StormTeam 5, prompts a concerted effort from the city's public services, Boston's Department of Public Works is poised to combat the wintery onslaught with increased staffing, and a similar bolstering of personnel has been arranged for the police and fire departments, all insights garnered from Mayor Wu's update ahead of the winter storm, with Wu thanking the workers who will brave the elements to serve the community.
For additional assistance or inquiries during the storm, BPS Superintendent Mary Skipper reminds families that the helpline, 617-635-8873, will remain operational throughout Monday as she expressed in a statement obtained by WCVB. Mayor Wu echoes the sentiment by urging the community to check on their neighbors and friends, stay inside, and clear the roads for emergency crews to perform their duties effectively, according to her interview with WHDH.
