California's own Attorney General, alongside a coalition of 34 other state attorneys general, has slammed xAI, the owner of social media platform X and AI chatbot Grok, amidst troubling revelations. In a letter addressed to the company, they demand immediate action to combat the AI's unsettling ability to generate and circulate nonconsensual images and child sexual abuse material. "You are investing tens of billions of dollars into developing powerful AI tools… it is your obligation to comply with the law and devote sufficient attention and resources to avoiding the kind of widespread harms and abuses we are seeing now," the letter states, calling for stricter safeguards to protect users, particularly minors, as stated by the Oklahoma Attorney's General Office.
Emerging reports have indicated that users could prompt Grok to "undress" women and children, manipulating the images into sexual contexts without consent – engaging, distressingly, the chatbot's capabilities as a disturbing feature. While xAI has reportedly put limited measures into place, reducing such content, the Oklahoma Attorney's General Office are seeking assurance of these measures' effectiveness. In violation of the upcoming federal Take It Down Act, set to go live in May, the content in question disturbingly remains accessible. The act would compel the company to expeditiously expunge such images.
Attorney General Gentner Drummond, taking a firm stand to shield the vulnerable, emphasizes, "The protection of Oklahoma's children and citizens from exploitation is non-negotiable.” With an implicit ultimatum, he says, “xAI has a responsibility to ensure its technology cannot be weaponized to create child sexual abuse material or nonconsensual intimate images." Oklahoma Attorney's General Office urges, demanding immediate closure of these dangerous loopholes proving that user safety is more than an afterthought at xAI.
The Oklahoma Attorney's General Office have outlined specific demands for xAI, which include unequivocally disabling Grok's ability to produce such explicit material, erasing any that exists, taking action against users who've disseminated this content, and letting X users control how their content can be edited by Grok. Disconcertingly, a global company that prides itself on creating cutting-edge AI tools now finds itself in the crossfire, with its commitment to user safety rigorously tested by public officials. With the wielded power to craft our digital narrative, companies like xAI must tread conscientiously, ensuring ethics and humanity are not lost in the code.
