The trial for Kenneth Lee Simpson, charged with capital murder for the death of Hermann Police Sergeant Mason Griffith, is slated to commence this morning in Franklin County. Simpson is facing charges including first-degree murder for the events of March 12, 2023, which resulted not only in the death of Sgt. Griffith but also the serious injury of Officer Adam Sullentrup, as reported by FOX 2 Now.
According to information from ABC 17 News, the altercation that culminated in the tragedy unfolded after a call concerning an "irate person" at a Casey’s General Store; the officers identified the individual as Simpson, who had outstanding felony warrants, as their attempt to arrest him led to the fatal encounter, video footage showed that as Griffith attempted to handcuff Simpson, he drew a firearm and shot both officers, which set off a series of events ending in an extensive standoff and the eventual arrest of Simpson the following day.
Video evidence, as detailed by the Missouri State Highway Patrol, captured the grim reality of the incident, illustrating the officers’ response to the situation without weapons drawn when Simpson unleashed a barrage of bullets, a detail confirmed by ABC 17 News. Following the shooting, Simpson was the subject of a near 14-hour standoff near Missouri Route 19, where he holed up in a residence before finally surrendering to authorities.
Sgt. Griffith, grievously wounded in the exchange, was unable to survive his injuries despite being rushed to Hermann Hospital, while Officer Sullentrup required more than half a year of rehabilitation in Colorado before returning home ahead of the holiday season in 2023, as told to FOX 2 Now.
The trial, with a jury drawn from Greene County, is expected to last through February 6, 2023, with both Saturdays and regular weekdays included for proceedings and where the Missouri Attorney General's Office is seeking the death penalty, alluded KRCG TV. However, the presiding judge has posited that the trial may conclude ahead of the anticipated three-week duration.
