Yesterday in East Oakland, a red car crashed straight into Lightning’s Boxing Club, slamming into a vintage boxing ring that owner Kris "Lightning" Lopez says once hosted George Foreman during his comeback years. The impact blew out the gym’s front doors and shoved the classic ring off its mark, leaving coaches and young fighters rattled and scrambling to figure out how to keep the place running.
According to KTVU, Lopez said a red Honda collided with another vehicle on MacArthur Boulevard before barreling into the gym at 5845 MacArthur Blvd. Photos he shared with the station show the Honda jammed against the ring while a second blue sedan is hauled away by a tow truck. Lopez told the outlet the driver took off on foot, and Oakland police are now investigating.
Lightning’s Boxing Club is more than a fight gym. Run by Lopez, a former Golden Gloves champion, it doubles as a neighborhood hub for kids and teens. The club’s website, Lightning’s Boxing Club, highlights youth programs and mentoring aimed at underprivileged teens in East Oakland and lists the MacArthur Boulevard location. Members say the gym often serves as a safe after-school hangout for local students.
A Ring With A Roster Of Champions
Lopez told KTVU he bought the ring in 2009 and has guarded it ever since for serious fighters. The ring, he said, once held George Foreman during a 1980s comeback run and also hosted Sugar Ray Leonard and Wilfred Benitez. He estimated the crash twisted the ring about 15 degrees, knocked over the ring stairs and wrecked the gym’s sign. To help cover repairs, Lopez and gym members have launched a GoFundMe, according to the station.
Investigation And Community Response
Lopez told the station the gym’s core mission is mentoring and providing a positive outlet for underprivileged youth, including many students from Unity High School. Trainers have been juggling schedules and shifting classes around the damage while they figure out what can safely continue. For now, Lopez is focused on stabilizing the ring so the students who count on the gym still have a place to go.
What Comes Next
Oakland police are continuing to investigate the crash, and club leaders say they plan to share updates as repairs move forward. Lopez said protecting the history wrapped up in that old ring is a priority as Lightning’s Boxing Club fights to get back to normal.
