As Charlotte grows, its streets are getting busier, and traffic congestion is on the rise. To keep up, the Charlotte Fire Department is improving its emergency vehicle driver training. Firefighters are learning how to safely and confidently navigate large fire trucks through heavy city traffic during emergencies.
In a recent social media post, CFD highlighted this rigorous training program, showcasing the twice-yearly effort to keep fire engine drivers sharp. "It is about preparing firefighters to safely move large apparatus through a growing city, crowded streets, and unpredictable traffic," the department outlined. Fire Engineer Ray Murphy, from Engine 18 at Firehouse 18, detailed how this training cultivates assurance, especially for members who do not drive daily.
According to the Charlotte Fire Department's communications, the drills are diverse, from backing up large vehicles and completing serpentine paths to navigating the tight squeezes that urban environments often demand. "From backing and serpentine movements to navigating tight spaces, the goal is simple: give firefighters the skills and experience they need before they ever respond with lights and sirens," the department emphasizes.
"As Charlotte continues to grow, safe and disciplined emergency driving remains critical for our firefighters and for the community we serve," the Facebook post concluded.
