The Cleveland Fire Department is currently investigating a small fire deemed "intentionally" set within an apartment building on Cedar Avenue. Early Sunday morning, Cleveland firefighters responded to reports of smoke coming from the stairwell of the building located in the 2700 block, as reported by Cleveland 19 News. Officials indicated that a resident encountered smoke outside his door, causing what can only be described as a moment of panic, immediately retreating into his apartment, and engaging in a not-so-ordinary escape by window to an adjacent balcony for refuge.
Firefighters were able to assist the resident from the neighbor’s apartment, a narrative corroborated by Lt. Mike Norman and shared by News 5 Cleveland. The situation, thankfully, resulted in no injuries, even as the flames were confined to the stairwell, causing an estimated $1,000 in damages. This monetary estimate of damage has frequently been cited across multiple reports, underscoring the tangible losses of such seemingly small yet consequential acts.
The authorities have continually stressed that the blaze was a deliberate act, with ongoing inquiries to determine the perpetrator. "The fire was set intentionally," the Cleveland Fire Department affirmed to WHIO, further reflecting the gravity of the situation that could have escalated beyond property damage, toward loss of life—an outcome mercifully avoided in this instance.
