The National Weather Service in Portland issued a Cold Weather Advisory effective from 10 PM Friday evening to noon on Saturday, warning of low temperatures and wind chills in the Northwest Oregon and Southwest Washington areas. According to the announcement, residents can expect temperatures and wind chills as low as 15 to 25 degrees Fahrenheit.
The advisory covers northwest Oregon and southwest Washington, including Portland, Vancouver, Camas, and Eugene. Sustained cold can cause frostbite and hypothermia with prolonged exposure, especially affecting people without shelter, pets kept outdoors, and the elderly.
Residents are urged to dress warmly if they must venture outside, with a hat and gloves to cover exposed skin and prevent cold-related injuries. Furthermore, "use caution while traveling outside," the NWS advised. Pet owners are reminded to keep their pets indoors as much as possible and to ensure outdoor animals have access to warm, dry shelter along with unfrozen water.
People without adequate heat or shelter can call 211 for assistance. Cold temperatures and wind chills can be dangerous, making community support and awareness essential. The advisory also urges frequent checks on older family, friends, and neighbors.
The NWS Portland advises using portable heaters safely and warns against indoor use of generators or grills due to carbon monoxide risks. The forecast includes widespread frost, clear skies, and light winds, with highs just under 50°F early in the week. Showers are possible by Wednesday, lingering slightly through Friday, with temperatures peaking in the low 50s.
