The saga of John Michael Kaleel, a 69-year-old former piano teacher from West Hollywood, took a decisive turn as he was extradited from Australia to face sentencing in the United States for committing lewd acts on a child. Kaleel, who had fled to Australia while awaiting the verdict of his trial, was handed over to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department upon arrival at Los Angeles International Airport last Thursday, as reported by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

After being convicted on October 8, 2025, of four counts of lewd act upon a child age 14 or 15 and one count of lewd act upon a child under age 14, Kaleel had dodged the immediate consequences of his actions by escaping to another continent, still, the steadfast work of international and domestic law enforcement brought him back to face justice. "That predator, John Michael Kaleel, was tried and convicted but attempted to escape justice by fleeing to Australia during jury deliberations," said Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman, "He has now learned the hard way that you can run but you cannot hide, a lesson he can contemplate while hopefully serving years of state prison," Hochman’s statement highlighted the collective efforts of several agencies to ensure Kaleel's return to the U.S. for sentencing.

The charges stem from incidents that occurred between 2011 and 2013, involving a long-time student who was 13 at the beginning of the abuse. The collaborative efforts for Kaleel's extradition involved the U.S. Department of Justice's Office of International Affairs, the Australian Attorney-General’s Department and the Australian Federal Police, with the U.S. Marshals Service ultimately escorting Kaleel back to American soil to be held accountable for the crimes he had been convicted of in case SA092017.

While the sentencing date for Kaleel has yet to be scheduled the case, prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Ariel Anson of the Sex Crimes Division and investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Special Victims Bureau, represents a concrete stand against those who seek to exploit and harm the most vulnerable amongst us and then flee from the repercussions of their actions, officials are determined to follow through with justice and closure for the victim. District Attorney Hochman’s office extended their sympathies to the victim, acknowledging the years of abuse they suffered at the hands of their trusted piano teacher. "Our hearts remain with the victim who endured years of abuse by someone he trusted," Hochman said in owning up to the duty that comes with seeking out predators who harm children.
