Conyers, Georgia marked a new chapter in its history on Wednesday, January 7, as Connie Alsobrook took office as the city's first female and Black mayor during a ceremony at Cherokee Run Golf Club. In an event that reflected the city's changing demographics and commitment to diversity, nearly 200 community members gathered to witness the momentous occasion.
Alsobrook's inauguration, coupled with the swearing-in of Anthony Pacheco, Conyers' first Hispanic city council member for District 1, and the re-affirmation of Charlie Bryant's commitment to District 2, Post 1, for a second term, symbolizes a significant shift in the city's representation. The oaths of office were administered by Rockdale County Chief Magistrate Judge Phinia Aten to Mayor Alsobrook and by Rockdale County Superior Court Judge Nancy Bills to Council Member Pacheco, and Council Member Bryant.
In her address, Mayor Alsobrook articulated the significance of her election and the collective hopes for the city's future. "This win represents a commitment by the people of Conyers to progress, fairness, and inclusive leadership. It signals a desire for a city that listens to its residents and values every neighborhood. This moment is about unity, trust, and moving Conyers forward together," Alsobrook told City of Conyers News. Her message underscored a dedication to fostering a sense of belonging and equity within the community.
The new administration is wasting no time, with plans set to map out the city's direction for 2026 and beyond during the Mayor and Council Retreat scheduled from January 9-11. Mayor Alsobrook's vision prioritizes an inclusive Conyers, emphasizing equal access to resources and safety across all neighborhoods. "My plan is to ensure Conyers is a city of inclusion, where every resident has access to the same resources and opportunities, regardless of which side of town they live on. That means transparency leadership, open door mayor and policies that uplifted all communities. I am focused on building a city where everyone feels seen, heard, supported, and safe," Alsobrook explained, according to the City of Conyers news release.
For those who missed the historic event, the January 7 City Council meeting can be streamed on the city's official website. Conyers residents are encouraged to engage with their local government by attending city council meetings, which take place the first and third Wednesdays of each month.
