Deputies in north Harris County say a Houston mother was drunk behind the wheel when she crashed with three young children in her vehicle on Monday, leading to a felony DWI charge and a $15,000 bond.
According to Constable Mark Herman's Office, deputies were called to a crash in the 500 block of East Cypresswood Drive. They identified the driver as Lynda Johnson and reported that she showed multiple signs of intoxication. Inside the vehicle, deputies said they found three children, ages 3, 4 and 11.
Johnson was arrested at the scene, booked into the Harris County Jail, and charged with driving while intoxicated with a child passenger. Her bond was set at $15,000.
What Deputies Reported
In a post from Constable Mark Herman's Office, officials said deputies responded to the East Cypresswood crash on Monday and conducted standardized field sobriety tests on Johnson. Those tests, the office said, indicated she was intoxicated.
The post states that all three children were in the vehicle at the time of the crash. They were released to a guardian at the scene. The constable's office added that Johnson's case was assigned a bond amount tied to the 351st District Court in Harris County.
What the Charge Means Under Texas Law
Under Texas law, driving while intoxicated with a child passenger is classified as a state jail felony, according to Justia.
Legal summaries note that a state jail felony in Texas can carry a sentence of roughly 180 days to two years behind bars and fines up to $10,000, depending on the specifics of the case and any aggravating factors, as outlined by FindLaw. Those penalties can increase if other offenses, such as intoxication assault, are involved, and any defendant charged will move through Harris County's criminal court system.
Precinct 4's Enforcement Push
Constable Herman's office has been vocal about cracking down on impaired driving in recent months. Precinct 4 reported more than 1,000 impaired-driving arrests last year and coordinated a multi-agency DWI initiative during the holiday season. ABC13 covered the effort, which included deploying extra deputies and on-site resources to speed up DWI processing.
Officials continue to urge residents to use sober drivers or rideshare services and to report suspected impaired drivers to law enforcement.
Next Steps in Court
Per the constable's post, Johnson's bond was set at $15,000, and the case is associated with the 351st District Court in Harris County. Members of the public can look up court records and future hearing dates through the Harris County District Clerk online portal.
For now, the constable's Facebook post remains the main public account of the incident. This story may be updated as additional court filings or settings become available.
