A Crawford County resident, Nathaniel Rod Gibson, 34, has confessed to allegations of grooming and illegal sexual contact with a minor, as reported by the U.S. Department of Justice on their official website. On Wednesday, in St. Louis' U.S. District Court, Gibson entered a guilty plea to charges of traveling with the intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct and coercion and enticement of a minor. The U.S. Attorney's Office, Eastern District of Missouri stated that Gibson had provided the victim with a phone and exchanged over 18,996 text messages from March to September 2023, instructing the minor to delete any questionable messages preventing her mother from discovering their content.

During a period in June 2023, Gibson had driven the minor from Missouri to an Arkansas campground and committed illegal sexual acts both there and at his residence back in Crawford County, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office admission, Gibson orchestrated the movement across state lines which one such charge of travel with malevolent intent could lead to a prison sentence of up to 30 years, in addition to a possible 20 years for the charge of coercion and enticement.

The investigation of this distressing case was a collaborative effort by the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office, Diamond City Police Department in Arkansas, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Behind the prosecution is Assistant U.S. Attorney Jillian Anderson, and Gibson's sentencing date is arranged for April 15. The case is a part of the nationwide initiative Project Safe Childhood, launched by the Department of Justice in May 2006, aimed at tackling the escalating issue of child sexual exploitation and abuse, which mobilizes federal, state, and local resources toward identifying and prosecuting predators as well as aiding victims.
