Dallas drivers, brace yourselves for a major disruption this coming weekend as substantial sections of I-30 will be entirely off-limits. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is diving into the I-30 Canyon Corridor Improvement Project headfirst, and it means all eastbound and westbound lanes of I-30 will shut down starting 10 p.m. today until the wee hours of next Monday morning. According to the City of Dallas, the closure will affect the stretch between I-35E and I-45/US 75.
The necessary detour will send drivers scrambling to SH 366 (Woodall Rodgers Freeway) as the alternative east-west thoroughfare, and TxDOT doesn't mince words about the expected slowdowns – they're advising folks to avoid the area if they can and to plan for extra travel time, if they can't. And there's more: another closure like this is due to hit us later in the month, though specifics are yet to drop.
It isn't just the weekend warriors who will feel the sting. An array of downtown streets will see extended closures and lane reductions that will test the mettle of daily commuters and locals alike. Get ready to reroute, as Cesar Chavez Boulevard, Cadiz Street, and Akard Street are all slated for shutdowns, some lingering into the summer of 2028. Add to that, the Good Latimer Expressway narrowing down to a single lane in each direction until early 2028, and the picture of a squeezed Dallas downtown traffic landscape is pretty clear.
