In Coronado, a morning car chase ended in a dramatic fashion when a driver, attempting to evade the police, careened down a ravine and then fled on foot. The Coronado Police Department reported the incident on their social media, detailing how officers initially spotted the vehicle driving without headlights at around 2:20 AM near Alameda and 1st Street. When the police tried to pull the driver over, the car did not stop, leading officers on a pursuit that spanned from the city streets, across the bridge, and onto the northbound lanes of the I-5 freeway before the driver exited into San Diego.
As shared by the City of Coronado Police Department, the chase concluded when the suspect drove into a dead end near Brooks and Albatross Streets, subsequently going over an embankment and tumbling down into a ravine. The driver managed to escape the crash site, prompting a search operation. Responding to the scene, SDPD units and their K-9 team scoured the area for the suspect to no avail; the driver remains at large.
The City of Coronado Police Department's message, tinged with a hint of irony, advised the unidentified driver: "If this is your vehicle, feel free to contact the police department (619) 522-7350 or stop by the station. We already have your car and would be happy to discuss the rest." Clearly, authorities are hoping the owner will come forward to claim the vehicle and, presumably, provide some answers about the early morning escapade that momentarily disrupted the tranquil predawn atmosphere.
