In a revelation that draws the curtains back on a cold case spanning over six decades, investigators have confirmed the identity of skeletal remains found in 1966 as belonging to Ronald Joseph Cole, a Fillmore man reported missing in 1983. The Ventura County Sheriff's Office, working alongside the DNA Doe Project and Astrea Forensics, has persistently kept the 19-year-old's case under review, despite the years that continued to stack against hope.
The investigation into Ronald Cole's disappearance took a tenacious and collaborative effort, winding through the passage of time and technological advancements; it remained active as family members clung to the belief that Ronald's half-brother, David La Fever, held the answers to the mysterious disappearance—although no charges were ever filed, and La Fever died in 2007. The skeletal remains that have now been confirmed to have belonged to Ronald Cole were originally discovered near a creek in Henry County, Illinois, distinguished by the chilling mark of a bullet hole in the skull, which first classified the case as a homicide probe.
It was only in 2024 that the unidentified remains caught the investigative eye of the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, which reached out to the DNA Doe Project. The non-profit's request to Astrea Forensics for a specialized genetic profile analysis proved to be a linchpin. According to a press release by Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, potential family members were identified through this state-of-the-art DNA testing, which carved out a path for coordination between multiple law enforcement agencies."
On January 10, 2026, destiny's long-awaited calendar notification chimed with the Henry County Sheriff’s Office receiving word from the DNA Doe Project that the remains indeed belonged to Ronald Cole; yet, it's a discovery that kindles a complex sentiment—a mix of relief and reignited grief for a family that has waited years for closure and answers that may never fully materialize. Ventura County Sheriff's Office's Detective Erik Hernandez prepares the community for continued diligence: "The Ronald Joseph Cole missing person investigation is one of many cold cases constantly being reviewed," and the office's commitment to solve and make progress on these types of cases stands unwavering, as it was from the outset.
As the investigation shifts back to Henry County for the homicide inquiry, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office still urges those with pertinent information to approach Ventura County Crime Stoppers—where a reward of up to $1,000 might not only bring a monetary incentive but might also help serve the cold dish of long-delayed justice.
