With inclement weather on the horizon in DeKalb County, residents facing the bitter chill are slated to receive some respite as warming centers open their doors this weekend. According to an announcement shared by DeKalb County News, the centers will begin to quickly offer shelter starting at 6:00 p.m. from tomorrow, January 24 through Monday, January 26.
The cold snap, complete with hazardous wind chills, has prompted the county to activate the centers across multiple locations for a 24-hour stretch. Residents can seek out warmth and safety at Exchange Park Intergenerational Center, Frontline Response International, and St. Vincent de Paul, which are prepared to serve as sanctuaries against the freezing conditions. Transportation to these sites is set to start rolling out from Frontline Response Headquarters, with initial pickups expected to be completed by the margin of 7:30 p.m., followed by final sweeps lasting until 10 p.m.
The schedule for pickups encompasses four distinct routes across DeKalb County, ensuring coverage from North DeKalb and Chamblee-Tucker to Central Decatur and Emory, extending to East Stone Mountain and Candler, and not excluding South Central and Wesley Chapel areas. Detailed information about the pickup locations and times has been made available, with the objective being to assist as many individuals to safely reach a warming center as possible.
While transportation is organized meticulously to accommodate numerous locales, anyone in need can also directly approach Frontline HQ by 6:30 p.m. on the starting day for assistance with placement. Frontline Response International, contracted by DeKalb County, is mobilizing to tirelessly serve those in need during these extreme weather conditions, as temperatures are expected to plummet significantly, compromising the safety of residents without adequate heating and shelter.
