The Georgia Department of Corrections has appointed a new figure to take the helm of security at Rutledge State Prison. Desmond Cofield, previously Assistant Superintendent at Metro Reinvestment Center, has been named the new Deputy Warden of Security, stepping into his role on January 16, 2026. This move comes after Cofield's considerable experience within the department, spanning two decades.

As mentioned in an announcement by the GDC, Cofield began his career as a Correctional Officer in 2005, and since then he climbed the ranks, earning promotions to Sergeant and then to Captain; in his capacity at Rutledge SP, he served as the Facilities Tactical Squad Commander before his 2023 promotion, Cofield now set to oversee both the security staff and the 590 male offenders at Rutledge.

Commissioner Tyrone Oliver commended Cofield's extensive background, saying, "Desmond has gained a wealth of knowledge during his 20-year tenure with the agency." Oliver expressed his support saying, "We are proud to have him as a part of our team and are confident that he will continue to excel as he takes on his new role as Deputy Warden of Security at Rutledge SP," as mentioned on GDC.

In preparation for this and previous roles, Cofield has completed an array of training programs; these include but are not limited to Basic Correctional Officer Training, Tactical Squad Basic Training, Sergeant’s Academy, and Deputy Warden’s Academy which was mentioned in the Georgia Department of Corrections press release.
