Dozens of schools, including the Detroit Public School Community District, closed on Tuesday due to severe cold in Southeast Michigan. CBS News Detroit reported that wind chill could make temperatures drop to 15 to 24 degrees below zero, and a cold weather advisory is in effect until 10 a.m. on Tuesday.
Metro Detroit experienced continued weather disruptions as nearly 100 school districts closed again after recent snowstorms. Michigan State Police reported handling 99 weather-related auto incidents earlier in the week, mostly involving property damage and minor injuries. School districts follow established closure protocols that consider weather conditions, transportation, and “Student safety,” and are allowed six forgiven snow days, with up to three additional days available if approved, as per FOX 2 Detroit. Schools must still meet state requirements of 180 school days, 1,098 instructional hours, and at least 75% attendance.
State Superintendent Glenn Maleyko said there has not yet been a statewide request to add extra snow days beyond the six already allowed. Families are advised to continue checking for school closure updates as winter weather continues.
