A U-Haul truck drove into a crowd of protesters in Westwood, Los Angeles, during a Sunday demonstration in support of Iranian protests, detaining the driver as the incident unfolded. Cellphone footage captured the chaotic moment as the truck collided with individuals along Veteran Avenue, with protesters attempting to stop the driver by assaulting the vehicle, leading to multiple broken windows, as reported by NBC Los Angeles. LAPD Captain Mike Bland confirmed the driver, an adult male, was detained pending further investigation.
The Los Angeles Fire Department, as notified through an LAFD alert, evaluated two victims at the scene, both of whom declined medical transport. Meanwhile, amidst the size of the crowd that was both a sea of solidarity and a body of concern, paramedics faced delays in reaching a potential third victim. Officers in riot gear secured the area around the U-Haul, which showed visible damage, according to footage obtained by KTLA.
The protest in Westwood drew attention to the ongoing crackdown in Iran, where at least 544 individuals were allegedly killed amid uproarious protests against the regime, activists claimed. This further tension is on the heels as Tehran warned that the U.S. military and Israel might constitute "legitimate targets" in the face of potential American intervention. Still, hundreds marched to show their solidarity with the Iranian people, with Romina Tabibiazar affirming to NBC Los Angeles, "I was born there."
According to a follow-up LAFD alert, the crowd began to disperse voluntarily with no additional patients found. The United States Attorney Bill Essayli has stated, alongside working with the LAPD to establish the driver's motive, "FBI is on scene and this is an active investigation," in a statement shared with KTLA. This unnerving incident remains under wide scrutiny as the vibrant support for the Iranian people was disrupted by what many perceive as an attempt to silence their voices.
