An early-morning incident in East Memphis left an unidentified man dead and led to a manslaughter charge for 30-year-old Marques Griffin. According to Action News 5, Griffin awoke to find an intruder in his apartment on Robin Hood Lane. The altercation ended when Griffin followed the man outside and fired three shots as he fled.
The Memphis Police Department responded to the shooting around 3:30 a.m., finding the suspect critically injured in a courtyard. He was transported to a hospital, where he later died, according to WREG. Griffin said the man yelled, “I didn’t know anyone lived here” before fleeing and “Okay, okay, okay” after being shot. He placed his gun back on the bed before calling authorities.
Griffin is being held at the Shelby County Jail, and the shooting remains under investigation, the Memphis Police Department said. A nearby resident told FOX13, “We got to protect our homes. We worked too hard for what we have to just allow anybody to come in and try to take whatever.”
Local residents described the rapid unfolding of the shooting. One told FOX13, “A lot of gunshots,” adding that all they could do was ensure their children were safe. The community remains aware that defending one’s home can carry serious legal consequences.
