Detectives say a fast-moving theft ring that hopped across three East Tennessee counties has been stopped in its tracks, with officers recovering stolen trailers, construction materials and other property during a series of searches that also turned up suspected narcotics and weapons. The sweep has already produced arrests and charges in Monroe, McMinn and Meigs counties, and investigators say more charges could follow as the case keeps unfolding. Authorities tie the investigation to a string of thefts at homes under construction, helped along by photos and tips from frustrated homeowners.
Monroe County Sheriff Tommy Jones detailed part of the operation in a Jan. 23 post, noting that detectives from the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, Vonore Police Department and Madisonville Police Department, assisted by the 10th Judicial Drug Task Force, executed a search warrant at a McMinn County location where officers recovered a trailer reported stolen from Vonore and another taken from Monroe County. Jones said Vonore police charged one suspect, Monroe County charged two more, and one of the suspects was taken to the McMinn County jail as the investigation continued, according to Facebook.
Local station WDEF reported that an earlier Jan. 12 search warrant in McMinn County led to the recovery of stolen property along with methamphetamine, marijuana, firearms and explosives, and that one person was arrested during that operation. The outlet noted that recent theft and drug investigations have been overlapping across neighboring counties, according to WDEF.
How detectives connected stolen property to suspects
Sheriff Jones said homeowners who discovered items missing from construction sites shared photographs of suspected thieves and their vehicles, which gave detectives a head start. Investigators used those images to track down vehicle owners, then positively identified several suspects before making arrests. The post says detectives recovered numerous items tied to thefts in Monroe, McMinn and Meigs counties and that the case is still active, with investigators continuing to chase down new leads, according to Facebook.
What investigators seized
Local coverage of the McMinn County search described a haul that went well beyond stolen goods. Officers reported seizing suspected methamphetamine and marijuana, as well as firearms and explosives, during the operation, according to WDEF.
Legal status
At least three people have been charged in connection with the multi-county operation. The counts include alleged theft-related offenses and, in connection with what was seized during the searches, potential drug and weapons charges. All suspects are presumed innocent unless and until they are proven guilty in court, and prosecutors in the affected counties will review the investigative files before any formal charging decisions are finalized.
Investigators are asking anyone with information about the thefts to contact the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, the Vonore Police Department or the Madisonville Police Department. Sheriff Jones also publicly thanked partner agencies for their teamwork as detectives continue to work the case and sort through recovered property.
