Authorities in El Cerrito are turning to the public for assistance after a residential burglary was reported on Sunday. According to the announcement by the El Cerrito Police Department, the incident occurred on the 1700 block of Lexington Avenue, where a suspect allegedly broke into a home at about 2:36 AM. The resident, startled by noises and the sight of a flashlight beam outside the bedroom, texted 911 to report the burglary in progress.

One item of clothing was stolen from the residence after the suspect managed to get inside by prying a window open, reaching inside, and unlocking a door. In a turn of events, the burglar briefly opened the door to the bedroom, noticed the resident, who was holding a cellphone, and then promptly closed it again, fleeing the residence.

Despite a thorough search by officers who arrived promptly at the scene, the suspect was not located. The search encompassed the residence and the surrounding neighborhood. Video surveillance obtained during the investigation shows the suspect leaving the area, and the police department is now requesting that local residents review any home surveillance footage they might have that could provide further clarity on the suspect's identity or whereabouts.

The suspect is described as wearing a black sweatshirt, black pants, white shoes with red striping, and carrying a tan backpack. He is said to be an African American male, aged 35-45.
