As Northeast Ohio grapples with a regional supply chain shortage severely limiting the availability of road salt, the City of Euclid has issued a statement on social media regarding measures being employed to prioritise public safety. Euclid Ohio's announcement stresses that main roads and geographically hazardous spots will remain the focus of salting efforts to maintain safe passage for emergency services and persistent traffic.
Given the scarcity of road salt, Euclid's strategy involves a conscious decision to exclude secondary and side streets from routine salting, this restriction falls in line with their standard winter policy and is compounded by the current conservation tactics in play, secondary roads, although typically not prioritized for salt application, have presented increased icing concerns which the city recognizes, they've noted, however, that the effectiveness of rock salt drops dramatically as temperatures fall below the 15°F to 20°F range, an atmospheric state that is currently reality for the region.
In order to maintain safe conditions in spite of these temperature challenges, the volume of salt usage would have to jump by an estimated 75%, a luxury the city, bracing for more snowfall, cannot afford. The statement from Euclid urges residents to exercise caution and allocate extra time for travel, underscoring that this supply chain predicament warrants compliance and patience from all community members.
