A chase that began in the early hours of the morning ended with a fatal crash in Beaverton, authorities report. Per the Portland Police Bureau, officers had attempted to pull over a recklessly driven car around 2:17 a.m. on Saturday near Northwest 11th Avenue and Northwest Burnside Street. Following a brief stop where additional police cover was requested, the motorist fled before backup could arrive, heading west on Northwest Burnside Street.
Portland Police, in an effort to de-escalate the situation, turned off their overhead lights, mindful of the risk high-speed chases can pose. However, the vehicle was spotted again within Beaverton, on Southwest Barnes Road and Southwest 87th Avenue, moving normally, the driver abruptly executed a U-turn and once more evaded the officers; the police didn't even have time to reactivate their emergency lights.
The police located the errant vehicle shortly after, this time involved in a single-vehicle crash at Southwest Barnes Road and Southwest Valeria View Drive. They found that the driver, who was the sole person in the car, had died from injuries sustained in the accident. It has been confirmed that officers were not pursuing the vehicle at the time of the crash and that no other vehicles or individuals were implicated in the incident.
Following the accident, the Washington County Sheriff's Office has taken the lead on the investigation with their Crash Analysis Reconstruction Team (CART) responding to the scene.
