Last year, the FDA made significant strides in the fight against kidney disease, approving a half dozen drugs targeted at various renal disorders. These medications cater to patients with primary immunoglobulin A nephropathy, lupus nephritis, C3 glomerulopathy or primary immune complex membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis, and chronic kidney disease progression. Dr. Prakash Gudsoorkar, an associate professor of clinical medicine at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and a staff nephrologist at UC Health, outlined to MedCentral the advancements in 2025, noting the introduction of firsts in disease treatment, the rise in precision therapeutics, and the use of surrogate outcomes to rapidly push drugs through approvals.
The year kicked off with the FDA extending the indications for Ozempic (semaglutide) to now include adults with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease (CKD). This decision was fueled by the need to not just control blood sugar levels, but also to protect against kidney function decline and cardiovascular deaths. "Semaglutide continues to expand its role beyond glycemic control," Gudsoorkar told MedCentral via UC News. He highlighted the drug's additional benefits, like reduction in albuminuria, an important marker for kidney disease, thus making it a key player in broader strategies against CKD.
Another notable FDA nod was given to Gazyva (obinutuzumab) in October 2025. It stands as the first anti-CD20 monoclonal antibody shown to significantly aid renal response in lupus nephritis—a form of kidney inflammation caused by systemic lupus erythematosus. "Obinutuzumab has gained heightened importance in 2025," said Gudsoorkar, in a statement obtained by UC News, emphasizing its effectiveness especially in those with high-risk or treatment-resistant forms of the disease. Its role in B-cell depletion offers a more potent solution compared to its predecessors, pointing towards a trend of employing targeted therapies to combat kidney diseases.
A look ahead into 2026 suggests that the pipeline for nephrology treatments is set to grow further. Innovative drugs and treatments are on the horizon, aiming to provide freshly targeted relief for patients grappling with complex kidney disorders. With a year like 2025 setting the bar, the nephrology field seems poised to continue to rapidly move forward, armed with new tools and understandings to contend with a suite of challenging renal ailments. Gudsoorkar underscored this optimism, emphasizing ongoing research and promising developments in his conversation with MedCentral.
