The cascade of allegations against a former Detroit-area nurse has broadened with a new lawsuit filed on behalf of 14 additional women, swelling the tally of accusers to 26, as per a Detroit News report.
The defendant, Wilfredo Figueroa-Berrios, is charged with sexually assaulting several women under the guise of providing medical care during his tenure at Sinai-Grace Hospital, allegations that led to his eventual termination in August 2025; subsequently, lawyers representing the women accused Sinai-Grace Hospital of being aware of the misconduct well before it took action, allegations accompanied by claims that the hospital engaged in negligent hiring practices and a failure to enforce protective policies against such abuse, the Click On Detroit article details it.
The hospital, meanwhile, has issued statements countering the claims, asserting its commitment to patient safety and cooperation with law enforcement; and these statements come amid a fraught legal backdrop where Figueroa-Berrios faces a court appearance on January 30 for a motion hearing, with his trial commencing on April 13 according to the same source.
Further complicating the narrative for the hospital is the uncovering of patient records by attorneys, which suggest Sinai-Grace Hospital may have known about the former nurse's alleged activities much earlier than previously indicated, with a chart showing a patient refused Figueroa-Berrios's undue request during an EKG procedure, as revealed by the Rutland Herald.
This case's tendrils extend beyond Sinai-Grace, reaching to COPE Hegira Health Behavioral Urgent Care, where Figueroa-Berrios previously worked and is also accused of sexual misconduct, actions purportedly known by the staff yet not reported, thereby potentially violating mandatory reporting duties under the state's mental health code, as The Detroit News reported.
