Emergency responders were called to the scene of an overturned sewage truck last Thursday in Gaston County, resulting in a hazmat situation that prompted a multi-departmental response effort. According to a social media post by Gaston County Office of Emergency Management and Fire Services, the accident occurred at approximately 12:44 PM on the 400 block of Bob Friday Road.
Spencer Mountain Road Fire Department and GEMS were initially dispatched to address the accident, which involved a single patient requiring rescue from the overturned vehicle. In what seemed like an effort taking almost an hour, the agencies extricated the patient, who fortunately, sustained only minor injuries. Complicating the rescue operation, they discovered, whilst being extricated that the truck had been spilling its unsavory contents.
The incident escalated when the Gastonia Fire Department's Hazmat Team joined the effort, along with the Alexis Fire Department to assist in the patient’s extrication and Gaston County Office of Emergency Management and Fire Services to manage the hazardous materials situation. The swath of agencies present, which included the mentioned departments and GEMS, testifies to the seriousness with which this incident was treated.
The combined efforts of all agencies eventually contained the situation. Details regarding the cause of the accident and the particulars of the hazmat cleanup have not been fully released as of yet. Gaston County 911 was instrumental throughout the incident, coordinating the multi-faceted response and ensuring public safety. The event underscores the potential dangers that even routine transport of waste materials can pose to public health and safety.
