Georgia is stepping up its game when it comes to keeping hemp-derived THC and alcohol out of the hands of minors. On December 30, 2025, the Georgia Department of Agriculture Law Enforcement Division teamed up with the Worth County Sheriff's Office to carry out an underage sales compliance operation targeting local businesses across Worth County. This crackdown was designed to ensure establishments are playing by the rules, which state clearly that sales of these products to individuals under 21 are a big no-no.
The compliance sweeps involved supervised minors trying, but largely failing to buy THC products and booze at 17 locations, taking the integrity test in cities like Sumner, Poulan, Warwick, and Sylvester. "The Georgia Department of Agriculture has zero tolerance towards the sale of hemp-derived THC products to Georgians under 21," Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Tyler J Harper was quoted saying in a statement released by the Department of Agriculture. Seven of those businesses flunked, selling to undercover underage shoppers and landing themselves in hot water.
Worth County Sheriff Don Whitaker highlighted the operation's purpose, saying, "Preventing underage access to alcohol, vapes, and THC products is critical to the safety and well-being of our community." According to the official press release, the objective isn't to penalize these businesses but to firmly encourage them to strictly observe responsible selling practices. Those that failed the compliance checks were slapped with citations, which may lead to fines, license actions, or other penalties as set forth by law. On the flip side, the 10 compliant establishments were the unsung heroes, diligently checking IDs and refusing to sell to the young operatives.
In the statement released by the Georgia Department of Agriculture, Commissioner Harper extended his gratitude to the law-abiding businesses and signaled an ongoing commitment to work with law enforcement and retail hemp license holders. This effort is aimed to eradicate the risk of these substances trickling down to the underage population in Georgia. Establishments holding hemp licenses are being encouraged to double-check and to truly ensure their compliance with all relevant laws. Clearly, when it comes to defending the youth from premature exposure to alcohol and THC, Georgia isn't pulling any punches.
