The Georgia Department of Corrections is gearing up for a leadership shift within its Special Management Unit (SMU) as Eric Cox, previously the Warden at Dodge State Prison, is set to take the reins of the SMU starting January 16. Cox's appointment was made public through an announcement by GDC Commissioner Tyrone Oliver, who lauded the new Warden's consistent performance and professionalism throughout his time with the department.
With an extensive background dating back to 2008, when Cox joined the GDC as a Correctional Officer at Smith State Prison (SP), his career has been marked by a series of promotions, including time spent as Sergeant, Lieutenant, and Chief of Security. He also served on the Tactical Squad and as the TACT Squad Commander before ascending to positions of greater responsibility, such as Unit Manager at Smith SP and Deputy Warden of Security at both Smith SP and Ware SP. Cox has gained experience across various facets of prison management during his nearly two decades with the GDC, culminating in his 2025 promotion to Warden at Dodge SP, where he continues to serve until his upcoming transition.
"Eric has consistently demonstrated his commitment and professionalism throughout his tenure with the agency," Commissioner Oliver stated in the official GDC announcement. His tenure has also included comprehensive training modules ranging from Basic Correctional Officer Training to Warden's Pre-Command, equipping him with the necessary skills to manage an estimated 150 special mission male offenders and a dedicated team of staff members at the SMU. Commissioner Oliver’s confidence in Cox is clear in the announcement, reflecting expectations that the SMU will continue to operate efficiently under his leadership
